Wild ribes, as gooseberries or currants are called in biological terms, grow like weeds and produce berries for years on end without any maintenance whatsoever, but most growers of domestic bushes prune out canes more than three years old. Pruning to manage space isn’t really necessary, because these bushes tend to spread slowly and have a nice, compact growth habit. Just throw a little compost around the base of the plant every spring and give them enough water to keep them from wilting, and they’ll reward you appropriately.
